Prior to their only T20I versus England at the Edgbaston in Birmingham, Australia would’ve wished to perform well and end their English campaign on a high. However, it didn’t turn out the way they expected as the team lost the high-scoring match by 28 runs. Eoin Morgan’s men racked up a massive score of 221. Jos Buttler, following his heroics at the Trent Bridge in Nottingham, was promoted to open the batting.

He raced away to a 22-ball half-century and pushed the Aussies on the backfoot from the outset. He was dismissed in the ninth over, but by then the platform was already set for the Englishmen to put up a score on the board, beyond the visitor’s reach. The likes of Jason Roy, Alex Hales, and Joe Root also chipped in with useful knocks to pile on the agony for Aaron Finch’s men.

The Yellow Army’s misery continues

During the run-chase, the Men in Yellow found themselves in all sorts of trouble having lost half their side for 72 runs inside nine overs. Despite the flurry of wickets, skipper Finch didn’t stop trying and went about his business in a clinical manner. Unfortunately, he got minimum support from the other end. Finch eventually perished in the 16th over following which the match turned out to be a formality.

Meanwhile, Australia’s struggle to play spin bowling continued. In the ODI series, Adil Rashid (12) and Moeen Ali (12) picked up 24 wickets between them and as Tim Paine and Co found it difficult to decipher the tricks of the tweakers. The spin-duo was also the joint leading wicket-taker in the series. Even in the T20I, Rashid and Moeen nipped out four crucial wickets which never allowed their opponents to settle.

The visitor’s luck lied only in the toss as they won all six of them. Michael Vaughan, the former English skipper, ridiculed them for not playing spin efficiently while wishing the country a very good morning.  He took to Twitter and wrote, “Very consistent the Aussies … Won all 6 tosses … Lose all 6 games … And still can’t play Spin … Morning Australia … #OnOn”
