Not only has it served its purpose of entertaining the cricketing community it has also improved the ties between the different cricket boards. Even the international players of different countries have developed camaraderie by playing together in this league. Above all, it has been a perfect platform for the youngsters to fulfill their cricketing dreams.

In every edition, the franchises spend a fortune to get desired commodities, good players in their camp. Among them, certain cricketers prove their worth by putting up match-winning performances. While there are others who never justify their place in the side even after getting regular opportunities. These players stayed on because of their occasional sparks.

At the moment Mayank Agarwal is taking the right steps in his professional career. He looks a long-term prospect for the country&#8217;s opening duties at the Test level. Very rightly the right-hander is enjoying his share of the cupcake after doing the hard yards in the domestic arena. He has been a prolific run-getter for his state side Karnataka.

Even in his teenage days, Agarwal headlined the front pages because of his batting credentials. Especially his performances in the 2008-09 Cooch Behar Trophy and the 2010 U19 World Cup resulted in an IPL contract from his home-based franchise RCB. With his talent, he immediately made it to the playing XI and got regular opportunities at top of the order. However, Mayank&#8217;s IPL career has been a disastrous one as he has not been able to deliver on his promise to date.

He has scored only 1266 runs in 77 games. His average rests at 18 which is a shocker considering his ability to play shots all-round the park. Though in 2019 IPL he showed the glimpses of his form as part of the Punjab team he repeatedly played rash-shots after getting the starts. In every season Agarwal is expected to set the stage on fire but he has mostly burned-out in his own flames.

He piled on more than 18500 international runs in a career spanning over 16 years.

Especially in white-ball cricket, he ruled the roost with his attacking gameplay. That&#8217;s the reason why Kolkata made him the icon player in the inaugural season of IPL. Besides his partnership with Brendon McCullum at the top was expected to carry the batting mantle. Sadly the southpaw didn&#8217;t enjoy a breakthrough season as a skipper and as well as a batsman in 2008. As a result, he lost captaincy before the second edition which affected his batting as he managed mere 190 runs in 13 innings.

Thereafter he bounced back in style with the bat in the third season but his captaincy lacked the edge and another early elimination followed the suit. Then he played a couple of seasons for Pune Warriors but he couldn&#8217;t repeat his international success. In 2012 the team finished with a wooden spoon with Sourav leading the side. Above all in a format where batsmen are expected to maintain a healthy strike rate his number stood at 107 which is unacceptable.

When England won the 2019 World Cup it completed a fairytale co-authored by an Irishman. Yes, it was Eoin Morgan who fulfilled the dreams of millions of English cricket fans by leading the team to its pinnacle in the limited-overs format. The cricketing fraternity will be forever indebted to Morgan for introducing a brand of cricket that has entertained fans all over the world.

Also, his batting has inspired the upcoming generation of cricketers. The southpaw is a tailor-made material for white-ball cricket and his striking abilities can stun the best of the bowling attacks. Seeing his qualities the Bangalore franchise bagged him for the 2010 IPL season. Unfortunately, he could only muster 35 runs in 6 innings. Immediately he found himself in the auction pool and joined the Kolkata bandwagon.

He spent 3 seasons in the KKR camp but his average performances resulted in a contract termination before the 2014 IPL. Afterwards, the left-hander has been part of a couple of more teams. Still, he has been unable to score runs with the same freedom as he is used to for the England team which has been a major letdown. His strike rate of 120 proves that &#8220;Morgan -the finisher&#8221; has never taken the center stage in the league.

Apart from his on-field heroics, his personal life hardships can also motivate millions of youngsters around the globe.

When India won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, Yuvraj played an important role with his all-round skills. The southpaw can clear the biggest of boundaries with ease and his range-hitting is a visual treat. That&#8217;s why he was roped in by the Punjab franchise as the icon player in the 2008 IPL. However, it didn&#8217;t go as planned as the leadership duties bogged him down and affected his free-flowing batsmanship. Eventually, he was released before the 2011 IPL.

Since then he has played for as many as 5 franchises and has flattered to deceive in every edition. What&#8217;s more disappointing is his inability to prove his worth after bagging high-profile contracts. His highest season total is 376 runs which is not the kind of number expected from a match-winner like him. Even after playing 11 complete seasons he has stroked only 13 half-centuries, a clear indication of his inconsistent outings.

In modern-day cricket, some players will not be flustered by the situation of the game. One of them is Glenn Maxwell as he has immense self-belief in his capabilities. He only played 2 games in his debut year and the following season he changed his base to Mumbai. Finally, his IPL career took off in 2014 as he ended up with more than 550 runs while shouldering the batting responsibilities of the Punjab team. Suddenly he became the blue-eyed boy of the league.

What followed stunned the cricketing fans as his fortunes took a nosedive. In the next three seasons, he became a liability for the North Indian franchise. Then he gobbled up another expensive contract from the Delhi team but he couldn&#8217;t prove his batting credentials. The biggest disappointment was his reckless shot-making. In the name of intent Maxi regularly put his side in a spot of bother which is not a quality of an international star. His 2018 IPL stats, 169 runs in 12 games tells the complete story.

With his talent, Dinesh Karthik could have been one of the leading cricketers of this country but sometimes destiny leaves one in the middle of the road. From his teenage days, the keeper-batsman has been around the senior Indian team. He made his international debut at the age of 19 and immediately impressed everybody with his skillset. Especially his batting elegance has caught the attention of several cricketing pundits.

The right-hander has also been a hot property in the domestic circuit which earned him a contract worth 2.1 crores in the first IPL auction. He donned the Delhi jersey for the first three seasons and enjoyed decent success. Thereafter his brand value doubled in the 2011 IPL auction as he became part of the Punjab team but he couldn&#8217;t justify his price tag. From there on it has been a journey of ups and downs for the Tamil Nadu cricketer.

He has switched 5 teams in 8 seasons. Even though his salary cap has increased exponentially Karthik has failed to deliver on his promise. Like his international career, his consistency has remained a mystery which has cost the franchises heavily. During all this time he also took over the captaincy charges of the Kolkata team before the 2018 IPL. There also he has been unable to lead the team with a proper plan and it is clear from their disastrous campaign in 2019.

The former Sri Lankan skipper, Angelo Mathews is one the finest all-rounders to emerge out of the island nation. He is a cricketer who can single-handedly win games for his side. He also has a smart cricketing brain which has helped the Lankan Lions notch up memorable victories. In all, he has been a great servant of the country with his valuable contributions.

With his multi-dimensional skillset, Mathews will always be a priceless asset in T20 cricket. That&#8217;s why the KKR franchise fished him in the 2009 IPL auction. Within a year he became a regular member of the playing XI and generated good numbers. Then he found a new home when the Pune franchise bagged him for 4.3 crores in the 2011 mega sell-off. He played 20 games and didn&#8217;t taste any sort of success.

Even after his repeated failures in the previous seasons, the Delhi team decided to spend 7.5 crores on him in the 2015 auction. Mathews couldn&#8217;t cope up with the pressure of playing different roles and was released following that edition. Though he made another visit to the Delhi franchise in 2017, results didn&#8217;t improve. It&#8217;s quite strange that a player of his caliber couldn&#8217;t stamp his authority in this league.

Right from his teenage days, Piyush Chawla was termed a prodigy because of his ability to bowl match-winning spells. Even in the 2006 U-19 World Cup final, the leggie proved his mettle by scalping 4 wickets. It resulted in a national call-up and he became the second-youngest Test debutant for India. Then in the following 5 years, Chawla represented the team in a handful of limited-overs games.

Notably, he also became a part of history when India won the 2011 World Cup. During all this time Chawla played the role of the frontline spinner for the Punjab franchise in IPL. In his 6 year stint, he scalped 84 wickets in 87 games with an economy rate of 7 which is reasonable. Then in 2014 IPL auction, Kolkata snaffled him for 4.2 crores and to date he has been a regular member of their action plans.

At first, numbers might fool one as he has fished 63 wickets in 70 games for his current team. However, in the last three seasons, his economy rate has gone up to 9 and his wicket-taking abilities have dropped down considerably. Especially his defensive line of attack has affected the team&#8217;s bowling plans. He is certainly a weak link of their bowling unit which needs a makeover before the 13th edition.

In recent times, the Indian team is demolishing the opposition with their high-profile pace attack. One such individual who is part of that group is Mohammed Shami. Since his debut in 2013, the speedster has been a breakout performer. He has helped the team secure memorable overseas Test wins. What makes him special is his knack of picking up wickets at important stages of the game.

Shami is equally effective with the new ball and as well as with the old one. He also has the pace to trouble quality batting line-ups. That&#8217;s the reason why franchises have always spent big money on making him part of their teams. In his initial days, he played 4 IPL ties for the Kolkata franchise. Then Delhi snapped him for 4.2 crores in the 2014 auction. It didn&#8217;t turn out to be a good buy as he looked clueless when the opposition batsmen attacked him.

In his four seasons with Delhi, he only managed 20 wickets in 32 games. Thereafter he moved to the Punjab team in the 2019 IPL and enjoyed a good season with 19 wickets. Still, his numbers are awful as he has been leaking runs at a rate of 9. Even in the previous season, there were a couple of instances when he letdown the skipper at crucial junctures. Finally, it can be said that Shami has been unable to dictate his terms in this league.

Zaheer khan is the perfect role-model for the current generation of fast-bowlers. He propelled the Indian bowling unit for more than a decade. In his prime he made the world-class batsmen dance to his tunes. Particularly nobody can forget his 2011 World Cup heroics where he ended up as the leading wicket-taker of the tournament with 21 wickets.

Khan is a complete bowler and can easily adjust to any format of the game. It is one of the reasons why he bagged a contract in the inaugural IPL auction. He scalped 13 wickets in 11 games while playing for RCB in his debut season. In the following season, he moved to Mumbai where he plied his trade for two years. Then again he returned to the Bangalore team before the 2011 IPL and stayed there for 3 seasons.

Though the left-arm pacer enjoyed decent success his numbers didn&#8217;t justify his white-ball supremacy which is often related to him. Then in the later years, he played for the Delhi team where he only picked up 27 wickets in 30 games. Being the frontline bowler of the side those figures are criminal. To be fair Zaheer lost his vigor in the final years of his IPL career and he might have dragged on for a little too long.

For Indian domestic cricketers, a good season of IPL is a pass to gain access to the senior team and its prime example is Karn Sharma. The leg-spinner got his national call-up after his consistent performances for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. In all, he played 4 international ties across formats. Notably, he made his Test debut against Australia and picked up 4 wickets.

He is a spinner who relies on his primary skill set rather than on his variations. Sharma also has good control over his craft and it is the quality which made him a regular in the Hyderabad set-up. However, his wicket-taking abilities degraded after the initial burst as he failed to pick up a single wicket in the 2016 edition.

Then he was bagged by the Mumbai franchise for 3.2 crores in the 2017 sell-off. Within a year he found himself again in the auction pool and this time the Chennai team paid 5 crores for his services. In his last 2 seasons, he could only manage 5 wickets in 7 games. Moreover, his economy rate has gone up to 10 which is not an ideal stat for a regular spinner. It seems that the price tag has affected his performances adversely.
