After a successful and rather historic run at home, Bangladesh travelled overseas to South Africa. Though not a lot was expected of them since traditionally even the Asian giants like India and Pakistan have struggled in the African nation but the way they went about business in both the Test matches attracted a lot of criticism at skipper Mushfiqur Rahim.

The most successful Bangladeshi captain has been questioned for his decisions at the toss since he won both the coin flips but elected to bowl first considering the wicket would assist pacers. As it turned out the Proteas relished the opportunity and posted totals big enough for them to lag behind even after batting twice.

Massive first innings scores helped South African bowlers keep them under constant pressure and with little experience of playing against such a potent attack in those conditions, the enthusiastic Bangladeshi line-up crumbled. The range of critics was not just restricted to the fans and experts but the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) also said that there was an error in decision making by the skipper.

Ashraful backs Mushfiqur

Amidst talks that the board is looking to replace Mushfiqur former Bangladesh skipper Mohammad Ashraful has thrown his weight behind the struggling wicketkeeper-captain.

“I do not know why he is afraid of everything although performance is in his side. It is better to leave if he cannot lead in his own way. I am with Mushfiqur; I think the decision will have to be taken after thorough discussions,” Ashraful was quoted as saying by bdcrictime.com.

He called Mushfiqur an honest man but also pointed out that there is a certain need for him to be tactful as the leader of the team and proactive during the game.

“Mushfiqur is an honest man – I’ve watched that, he is hundred percent honest. But he needs to be more tactful. Why he has to stand in the boundary line whether or not management tell him. When you cannot enjoy your work, everything will be tougher,” he added.

The Bangladeshi boys are now gearing up for the limited-overs leg of the tour where they will play 3 Odis and 2 T20Is.
