Senior Bangladesh wicket-keeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim has expressed disappointment with the players’ payment in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) that kicked off on Wednesday for he feels there is a discrepancy in it. And this has happened after the country’s cricketers took to protest against the board prior to their recent tour of India.

While Bangladesh’s ‘A-plus’ category cricketers get 50 lakh Bangladeshi Taka (around 59,000 USD) in the tournament, foreign ‘A plus’ category players get paid 84 lakh Bangladeshi Taka (around 99,000 USD).

In Bangladesh’s ‘A’ category, players get 25 lakh Taka (around 30,000 USD) which is less than half than that received by the overseas players in the same category — 56 lakh Taka (around 66,000 USD). For the veteran national cricketer, this is a “discredit” for the country’s cricketers.

‘Some players playing only T20 get more wage’: Mushfiqur Rahim

“If you see our players, Tamim or Shakib – we perform the whole year consistently but some players who are playing just the T20 format whole year get more wage. It is a bit of discredit for us. If you see the other leagues, their local players are the highest-paid players,” the 32-year-old Rahim, who played some fighting knocks in the recent tour of India that proved to be tough for Bangladesh, was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz. Mushfiqur is leading Khulna Tigers in the 2019-20 edition.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board decided to do away with the franchise-based system for this year’s edition. With differences arising with the franchises, the BCB snapped ties with them and rebranded the annual T20 league to mark the birth centenary of the country’s founding father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The national cricketers went on a strike over a 13-point demand and one among them was over the disparity in the payment structure.

Mushfiqur, whose team will play its first match of BBPL 2019-20 against the Chattogram Challengers in Dhaka on Thursday, hoped the issue will be sorted in the tournament’s next edition when the franchises are set to return. “We never get the expected wage and we tried to notify them about it (when we put across the demands),” said Rahim.

“They (BCB) also gave us hope. Maybe this BPL was arranged in a hurry and luckily it is happening. I hope everything will be fixed next year. So I am hoping, the demand that we have is reviewed next year,” the cricketer said, adding that apart from the top players, the cases of cricketers from other grades should also be reviewed.

Chattogram defeated Sylhet Thunder by 5 wickets in the opening match of BBPL 2019-20 in Dhaka omn Wednesday. The final will be played on January 17.
