Indian batter KL Rahul provided an update on his injury after a “successful” surgery. He said that the recovery period has begun and also thanked everybody for their messages and prayers. The 30-year-old has been out of action due to a groin injury that he sustained before the start of the five-match home T20I series against South Africa.

Rahul played all 15 matches in the Indian Premier League (IPL) earlier in the year for Lucknow Super Giants as the captain and guided his team to the play-offs. His last appearance on the field was on May 25 in the IPL Eliminator against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), and his last appearance for India was in February in an ODI against West Indies in Ahmedabad.

I’m healing and recovering well: KL Rahul

“Hello everyone. It’s been a tough couple of weeks but the surgery was successful,” wrote Rahul on Twitter. “I’m healing and recovering well. My road to recovery has begun. Thank you for your messages and prayers. See you soon.”

Rahul was initially named the captain for the South Africa series earlier in the month, in the absence of senior players such as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. But once he was ruled out, the captaincy was handed over to Rishabh Pant. Just before the day of the first T20I, June 8, he tweeted, “Hard to accept but I begin another challenge today.”

“Gutted not to be leading the side for the first time at home, but the boys have all my support from the sidelines. Heartfelt thanks to all for your support.Wishing Rishabh and the boys all the luck for the series. See you soon,” Rahul added.

Rahul is also one of the core team members of India in all the formats and was expected to open alongside skipper Rohit Sharma in the England tour. For the upcoming Test match against England in Birmingham, starting on July 1, Shubman Gill is expected to take his place while Rohit’s place also looks uncertain as the team waits for his Covid-19 test results.
