Shortly after Ranveer Singh was cast in the upcoming production ’83 as Kapil Dev, Nawazuddin Siddiqui has become the latest addition to the cast and crew as he will now be playing the role of the coach of the Indian team that triumphed in the 1983 World Cup.  Although Kabir Khan – the director of the film has chosen not to comment, the widespread rumour is that Siddiqui will indeed play the role.

Fondly known as Kapil’s Devils, the Indian team of 1983 beat the odds to secure a victory in the World Cup when they beat the West Indies. The latter was a star-studded side comprising of the likes of Viv Richards, Andy Roberts, and Clive Lloyd. However, with some fantastic cricket on the day, the Indians bowlers the Windies out for 140, thus winning the World Cup for the first time in their history.

An honour to be playing Kapil Dev: Ranveer Singh

Speaking about his role as Kapil Dev in the grand scheme of things, Ranveer Singh said that he was indeed happy to be playing the role of someone he had looked up to since he was a child. “It’s great to have Ranveer come on board as Kapil Dev, as honestly, I could see no one else in the role since I started working on the script.”

Ranveer also expressed his love for cricket by saying, “I was born at the time when cricket was big time. When Kabir Sahab had come to me and said that there will be a film on 83, I was like finally. And when he was narrating it to me, I was like woooh. It is not a story just about cricket but a human story.”
