New Zealand vs England, 2018: 1st Test, Day 1 – Statistical Highlights

England couldn’t last even one session against the New Zealand bowling pair of Trent Boult and Tim Southee as they were bundled out for just 58 runs. Boult took a 6-wicket haul while Southee bagged four wickets bowling unchanged for 20.4 overs. This game marked to be the first ever day-night Test match in New Zealand and the hosts batted out the session under lights with minimal loss. Kane Williamson scored an unbeaten 91 to help his side to finish the first day with 175/3.

All the stats and numbers that were recorded during the first day of the New Zealand-England Test series:

5 – Number of ducks in England’s first innings. These are the most in a Test innings since the six ducks by India against England in the 2014 Manchester Test match. These are also the joint-most number of ducks for England in a Test inning. This is the 4th time five England batsmen bagged ducks in a Test inning and the first since the 1976 Leeds Test against Windies.

These are also the most number of ducks in a Test innings against New Zealand. The last instance of a team bagging five ducks in a Test innings against the Kiwis was Sri Lanka in the 2006 Wellington Test.


27 – Score at which England lost their 9th wicket in their first innings. This is the 4th lowest total at which a team lost its 9th wicket in a Test inning. England never lost their 9th wicket before 40 runs in this format before. This is also the first time New Zealand had their opponent nine down before the score of 45 in Test cricket.


47 – Joe Root’s duck in this game is his first duck in 47 Test innings. This is his 4th duck in this format and his first as the captain of England.


58 – England’s total of 58/10 in this game is the lowest total in the day/night Test matches played so far. South Africa bowled Zimbabwe out for 68 in last year’s Port Elizabeth Test.


2013 – Joe Root is the first England captain since 2014 to be bowled on a duck in Test cricket. Root is only the 3rd England captain to be bowled on a duck in Test cricket since 1995. Alastair Cook in the 2013 Perth Test and Andrew Strauss in the 2012 Colombo Test bagged duck via bowled.

He is also the first England skipper to be dismissed for a duck against New Zealand since Graham Gooch in the 1990 Nottingham Test match.
