India’s campaign in the 2020-21 Border Gavaskar Trophy started on a horrendous note. They lost the game at the Adelaide Oval after getting bowled out for 36 in the second innings. Moreover, Virat Kohli and Mohammed Shami weren’t going to be a part of the last three Tests. However, India, under the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane, won the second Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Thereafter, India managed to draw the Sydney Test after some rear-guard action from Cheteshwar Pujara, Hanuma Vihari, and Ravi Ashwin, backed by some belligerence from Rishabh Pant. Going into the Brisbane Test, India didn’t have the odds in their favour. Out of six Tests, they had lost five, drawing one. Quite a few injury concerns didn’t help their cause either by any means.

India make an incredible comeback

However, defying all the odds, India came out all guns blazing and won the match by three years. They also retained the Border Gavaskar Trophy, winning the series 2-1. In the meantime, former Pakistan speedster Wasim Akram praised India for thriving in adversity. He was impressed with India’s comeback after the defeat in the opening Test.

He took to Twitter and wrote, “Incredible Test & series win for India have not seen a bold, brave & boisterous Asian team on a tougher tour of Australia. No adversity could stop them, frontline players injured, & won after a remarkable turnaround from the depths of 36 all out, inspiring for others. kudos India.”

Ravi Shastri, the head coach of the Indian team, also heaped praises on the players for standing tall in tough situations. The veteran said how Virat Kohli had followed his side with dedication despite not being part of the squad for the last three Tests in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane.

“The boys have performed so well that I am lost for words. The character of this team is amazing especially after the 36 all out at Adelaide. This team wasn’t built overnight. Virat has been with us despite not being here. His intensity rubbed on to everyone else. Rahane might look calm but he is a strong man from the inside. A tough character,” Shastri was quoted as saying.
