The former Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar has hailed the current Indian skipper Virat Kohli for his splendid knock in the decider against New Zealand. The no. 1 batsman in the world looked in magnificent touch in the recently concluded ODI series and notched up two centuries. He was also awarded Man of the Series for his stellar performances. However, Gavaskar felt he learnt from his mistakes and nobody could’ve denied him a hundred in the series.

Kohli finished the series with 263 runs at an average of 87.66 and piled on the agony of the Kiwis. He endured a lean patch against Australia in the five matches and didn’t score many runs according to his standards. He would love now to continue the rich vein form in T20Is as well and win more games for his country. Interestingly, India has never won a T20 International against New Zealand so far since its inception and the captain would look set the records straight in the next three matches.

His consistency is beyond phenomenal

Sunil Gavaskar was all praises of Virat while talking to NDTV and stressed the fact that he learned from the mistakes he made against the Aussies and rectified them against the Kiwis. “Virat’s consistency with the bat is beyond phenomenal. Against New Zealand, there was no question of him being denied a hundred. He got denied against the Australians but remember he learnt from that. He was not trying to run the ball to third man (against New Zealand), like he got out against the Australians in two of the five matches,” he said.

“Key to Virat Kohli’s consistency is that he learns from his mistakes and to then avoid those. That is what Virat keeps on doing. There will be some same dismissals because that’s what cricket is all about but if you have made a mistake and you try to avoid it. The bowlers will get you out because they will bowl you the odd good ball, that is accepted. But the thing that he learns from errors and avoids them, that is why he is so consistent,” he added.

The three-match T20I series against New Zealand will start from November 1 (Wednesday) which will also mark the end of an illustrious career of the veteran pace bowler Ashish Nehra.
