Former Indian cricketer Zaheer Khan believes that a player must look after his fitness with utmost concern especially after returning from an injury. He emphasized on the importance of being 120-150% fit even before taking the field for your team at the highest level. Khan, who himself got ruled out just due to fitness concerns on many occasions during his career, mentioned the need of being match fit before any game.
Recently, Zaheer discussed how Kedar Jadhav’s recurrent hamstring injury has made life difficult for the all-rounder to play continuously for India. Kedar, who pulled his left hamstring in the first game of the IPL season earlier this year, was ruled out for the rest of the tournament. His injury concerns once came to the fore in the Asia Cup Final when he saw his right hamstring getting injured.
Worst nightmare to get injured while in the team
Khan mentioned how necessary it is to take care of the recurrent injury and follow a similar approach to avoid going down due to the same. “If it’s recurrent, then you have to be cautious. It’s best to test that hamstring over the period of time,” Zaheer was quoted as saying in Cricbuzz.
Zaheer shared his past experiences of being a fast bowler and how annoying it used to be, going down due to injury. The veteran pace bowler reminisced his worst experiences as a player, “It’s the worst nightmare that you go into the team and you are injured. That’s in a way, I used to hate the fact that everytime I used to get injured during the match.
“I used to feel that you are letting your team down. I myself used to make sure that you are giving more time than less recovery time, said Zaheer on making sure that one gives more recovery time after encountering an injury. “You must be 120-150% fit when you are making that comeback rather than rushing back to the highest level of cricket, ” he concluded.
