"Virat Kohli has reached a level where he can play well in adverse situations and he expects the same from the rest of India squad," quoted Sehwag.

The ongoing India tour of South Africa has drawn in a lot of criticism for the Indian side and their captain Virat Kohli. The cricket pundits have showered in with their opinions to work on. Recently, Virender Sehwag tried to analyze the depth of the issue and figure out what exactly is going wrong with the team. Sehwag feels that Virat Kohli needs someone to point out his mistakes.

Conventionally, there have been players in the team who have spoken to the captain on various issues. But in the current lot, nobody seems to talking to Virat on any captaincy issue. Moreover, Virat Kohli has started delivering in tough conditions and hence expects everyone else to do the same. But the fact is that the other players are yet to match his stature in the game, explained Virender Sehwag in a conversation with India TV.

“I think, Virat Kohli needs some players who can point out his mistakes on the field. Every team has four-five players who advise the skipper and help him avoid mistakes on the field. I don’t see that in the current Indian squad. There’s no one in the squad who can challenge Kohli’s selection decision in the dressing room. No player is up to his standard,” quoted Virender Sehwag.

“Virat Kohli has reached a level where he can play well in adverse situations and he expects the same from the rest of India squad. However, other players in the squad haven’t reached the stature where Kohli already is. This is affecting Kohli’s captaincy,” he added.

‘If I can score, why can’t you?

Speaking further on the same note, Sehwag explained his point a little more. He noted that for Virat Kohli the equation is pretty simple. He feels that if he is scoring runs at will, then the other players should also be able score runs. He cited the example of Sachin Tendulkar to explain his point. He noted that even Sachin used to feel the same during his captaincy stint.

“Kohli is just asking them to make runs like him. And there’s nothing wrong with it. I remember, when Sachin Tendulkar was the captain, he used to ask other batsmen to score runs. If I can score, then why can’t you?” remarked Sehwag.

Teamwork is important

In all this, the bottomline remains that the team needs to sit together to form a plan for the upcoming fixtures. A team cannot win based on individual brilliance. They need the unit to perform collectively. “It’s important is to sit together and talk to make a strategy for the upcoming Test. No single player can lead you to victory, teamwork is important. Every player has to contribute,” the former cricketer pointed out.
