Pakistani men’s cricket team is flying high these days, after winning the Champions Trophy earlier this year. They simply overthrew their arch-rivals India in the final match and now have received the status of heroes in their nation. However, this time has not been actually fruitful for their women’s team. While on one hand Sarfraz Ahmed and his boys were bulldozing every other opponent in CT, Sana Mir’s girls were thrashed by all the teams in the recently concluded Women’s World Cup.

Since their disqualification from the World Cup, Mir and her deputies are on the receiving end of endless criticisms coming in from all directions. In a cricketer’s life, scrutiny and criticism are quite common. However, a player does not expect the team coach to be critical of their attitude and performance in public. Head coach of Pakistani women’s cricket team Sabih Azhar blamed team manager Ayesha Ashar and skipper Sana for their humiliating outing in the WWC.

After reading that, Mir decided to speak her heart out and reach to the millions of Pakistani supporters. She wrote a long post on Facebook with the title “An Open Letter from Sana Mir .” In her letter (post), she wrote ” I would have preferred not to have had this conversation through the media but since a confidential report by the coach and comments by GM Women Wing and Chairman PCB have been making headlines, I feel obliged to give a short response to clarify some issues from my point of view.”

“My coordination with the coach suffered when I insisted on playing Diana Baig, who was in absolutely great form. That was our major disagreement. Diana is talented and was in great form in the WWC 2017. My fight was to play a youngster in the team who is ready for international cricket. I don’t regret it,” she wrote.

“We should be talking about cricketing problems we need to address, in a constructive and professional manner, rather than personalising issues. I do want to add that journalists are free to ask junior players about our attitude towards them. No one can have a 100% record but it’s disheartening to see a coach maligning the senior players who have been giving confidence and guidance to youngsters for so long,” Sana further added.

Mir won’t continue with the current setup

She has made her intentions clear of not working again with the current setup. “I want to make it clear I don’t intend to continue in the future with the current setup of the Women’s Wing in any capacity. Having said that I would still be sharing a detailed report with all of you to improve women’s cricket once I get back by the end of August In sha Allah,” she wrote.
