Parthiv Patel made his debut way back in 2002 versus England and impressed right away with his temperament. However, he was erratic in his performances thereafter owing to which he couldn’t cement his place in the national team. In a career, which has spanned 16 years thus far, the Gujarat-born cricketer has only managed 25 Tests, 38 ODIs and 2 T20Is for the Indian team.

There was a cut-throat competition for the keeper’s slot with the likes of Dinesh Karthik in the ranks. In 2004, a certain player by the name of MS Dhoni forayed into international cricket and stamped his authority across all formats. The Jharkhand-born player turned out to be an indispensable member in the side and Parthiv went out of the radar of the selectors.

“He is a legend”- Parthiv

Recently, the 33-year old attended a chat show Breakfast with Champions, hosted by Gaurav Kapur where he talked about the reasons why he couldn’t stay put in his position in India colors. The left-hander also didn’t mince any words in saying that it was Dhoni’s masterful shows that led to his elimination from the team.

“He (Dhoni) is a legend. There’s one thing many people tell me that You’re born in the wrong era. But I feel that we started playing before him. So if we didn’t perform poorly he wouldn’t have played in the first place. So instead of thinking that, I think it’s us who didn’t perform to our potential. That’s why MS came.” Parthiv mentioned.

So to blame someone else that I was born in the wrong era and all that is to comfort you, but deep down you know that you have not performed that’s why,” the wicketkeeper-batsman added. Dhoni retired from Test cricket back in 2014 but is still going great guns in limited-overs cricket. He is also expected to be a vital cog in India’s World Cup campaign next year.
