Back in March, the ball-tampering scandal in Cape Town marred Australian cricket’s reputation to a significant extent. The entire nation lamented the shambolic incident and thereafter, David Warner, Cameron Bancroft, and Steve Smith were meted out with bans by Cricket Australia (CA) then headed by James Sutherland. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull also bashed the players for the act.

Tim Paine took over the leadership from Smith midway through the match and the visiting team slumped in both the matches thereafter. Darren Lehmann, their head coach stepped down from his role after which Justin Langer took over the mantle. Meanwhile, Peter Handscomb, who was earlier assumed to have played a part in the fiasco mentioned that the video of the same was edited.

There was nothing else

In the footage, it was shown that Cameron Bancroft rubbed the sandpaper on the leather after which Lehmann delivered instructions to Handscomb. On the next shot, he was seen having a laugh with Bancroft after which Bancroft hid the object inside his pants. Handscomb said that there was a time lag of 20 minutes in the clips, featuring him as per reports in Cricbuzz.

“I love that footage because it’s actually amazing how much the media edited it. So, it shows me on the walkie-talkie then running out and talking to Cam (Bancroft). What happened, I am on the walkie-talkie. Twenty minutes, 25 minutes later, a player comes off because they need to go to the bathroom. I am next to it so that’s why I come on,” he remarked.

“I get put into a catching position next to Cam because we are both short catches… we are front of the wicket catchers or in slips together. That’s why I was there, literally just trying to have a joke with him. There was nothing else. All this build-up about me trying to do something there, it wasn’t there,” he added.
