Players with highest and lowest price values in the 2017 IPL

A few players earned back to the team what they were paid while others failed to match it up, there were a few who earned in negatives.

The Indian Premier League isn’t about the sport and entertainment of the Twenty20 format but also the famous auction and the players’ prices. A few players who were bought for the big bucks ended up performing at par with their contract price while a few ended up largely in deficit. Here, CricTracker presents a special insight of the players’ values and prices covering all the aspects in the recently completed IPL season.

David Warner, the Sunrisers Hyderabad captain got valued the highest as he scored 641 runs in the season, over 140 runs more than the next best at a staggering average of 58.27. His season performances were valued at Rs. 10.57 crores, the only player with 10 crore value in the season.

Ben Stokes, who was picked for 14.5 crores by the Rising Pune Supergiant and featured in only 12 games as he flown to join his England team early but his tournament’s credentials valued at 9.27 crores, right behind Warner. Stokes didn’t have have the greatest of starts but once he got going, he delivered for his team and helped them finish among the top 2 on the points table. He scored 316 runs and picked up 12 wickets in his debut season in the IPL.

David Warner’s batting average of 59 made the difference between him and Stokes and the Sunrisers skipper fetched nearly 2 crores more than Stokes in this part. Warner’s average earned him 2.11 crores, easily the highest for any player. The only other player in this season to earn more than a crore on batting average is Hashim Amla (1.46 cr)

Jaydev Unadkat and Bhuvneshwar Kumar who finished at top 2 in the bowling charts grabbed the 3rd and 4th spot in this table. Despite picking two wickets less than Bhuvi, Unadkat sneaking past the SRH’s lead bowler with the help of his fielding as he took 9 catches in the tournament. The Kings XI Punjab players, Glenn Maxwell and Axar Patel grabbed the next two spots with the help of their all-round performances throughout the season.

Bowling average – Rs.1,00,000 on every 100th run conceded (for every wicket) less than tournament average (Negative if conceded more than tournament average)

Bowling economy – Rs.1,00,000 on every 100th run conceded less than tournament’s average economy (Negative if conceded more than tournament average S/R)

As mentioned in the calculations, there was room for players attaining negative value. However, the player with the lowest price value in the tournament might surprise one and all as it is Moises Henriques who scored 277 runs at an average of 46.17 but he managed to take only one wicket at an average of 248 in the 24 overs he bowled in the tournament by conceding runs at over 10 an over. This resulted in his price tag reading (-) 1.8 crores. Ashok Dinda is at the second position which isn’t a surprise given the way he performed in the 3 games he was picked for.

Despite being picked at low rates in the auctions, few players exceeded their value with some brilliant performances in this season. Hardik Pandya, who has a price tag of just 10 lakhs valued 6.35 crores with his all-round performance for the Mumbai Indians, which is 63.5 times his salary. The new sensation Rahul Tripathi bettered his salary by 53.7 times while Yuzvendra Chahal valued at 45 times his auction price.
