Indian cricket team’s jersey is one of the most glamorous ones in World Cricket right now. The two different shades of Royal blue is differentiated by tri-coloured stripes of Indian flag to fall under Nike’s emblematic Jersey template. That said, only the keen observers would notice the three stars circumferencing above BCCI logo in the Indian jersey. Which brings us to the centroid of the issue…. What are these three stars symbolic of? What do they represent?

If you are an ardent fan of soccer, you might notice the same in the various jersey of prominent footballing nations. Even the iconic Yellow and Blues of Brazil’s national team jersey has five stars above its shield shaped emblem with CBF engraved in it. The Italian football has four stars inside its pentagonal shaped emblem with the tri colours of Italy inside it.

Coming back to the issue at hand, these stars represent the number of World Cups a team has won in its history. Brazil won the FIFA World Cup in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002 while Italy won the coveted trophy in 1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006. Therefore, the jerseys of the Brazilian team and Italian team have five stars and four stars respectively.

Connecting the dots, the Indian Cricket also has three prominent World Cup achievements and therefore have three stars over the BCCI emblem. India won the World Cup of 1983 and 2011 in ODI format. Also, MS Dhoni‘s men managed to win the inaugural edition of the ICC World T20 in 2007. Virat Kohli exactly knows what’s the importance of these stars in the jersey and once spoke highly about what it meant to him sporting the Indian jersey.

Virat Kohli on the importance of the stars

“I know there’s a billion-plus hope always riding on our team. That’s why I try to play with responsibility and with respect to the team’s needs. The pressure’s always on, so my focus has to be too. I feel really proud – for me the Three Stars on the jersey represents what the Indian team is today and how much they have achieved. I feel really honoured to be a part of a team that has won three World cup,” quoted Virat Kohli according to Sportswallah.
