South Africa and Zimbabwe are currently locking horns in the first ever 4-Day Test match. The one-off Test match is also the first Day/Night Test in South Africa. However, the match hasn’t been a memorable one for the Proteas as Quinton de Kock – the team’s gun player has suffered a hamstring strain during the course of South Africa’s first innings.

The wicket-keeper batsman was unable to take the field during Zimbabwe’s first innings. Subsequently, Proteas skipper A.B de Villiers donned de Kock’s keeping gears for 16 overs. Meanwhile, the left-handed batsman will go for scans today to determine the gravity of the injury.

Dr Mohammed Moosajee, the South African team manager updated on their wicket-keeper’s injury in an interaction with the media. “If he wakes up feeling 100% and the scans are clear then he could still keep wicket on day two, but that is very unlikely,” Moosajee said according to quotes on Cricbuzz.

De Kock’s injury sparked at the wrong time as South Africa would start their campaign against India in ten days time. Nevertheless, South Africa have a couple of replacement keepers in the ranks. Titans’ keeper Heinrich Klaasen is most likely to replace de Kock provided de Kock doesn’t recover for the first Test against India on the 5th of January.

A dominant day for South Africa

After Day 1 of the Test, the AB de Villiers-led side has been in a commanding position. Courtesy Aiden Markram’s second Test ton and de Villiers’ quick-fire half-century, the Proteas posted a decent first-innings score of 309/9 dec. Zimbabwe found themselves in shambles as Morne Morkel ripped through their top order with three wickets in seven overs.

Vernon Philander and Kagiso Rabada also tied the opposition batsmen down and maintained the pressure from the other end. The Proteas team will now be hoping for a performing for another impressive day in the office, meanwhile, hoping for de Kock to recover speedily.
