"Only if somebody tells them the reason, they can go back and get better and then come back stronger. That will be the only way Indian cricket will get stronger," Gavaskar said.

The selection committee led by Chetan Sharma announced India’s T20I squad on November 9 for the upcoming three-match series against New Zealand. There were quite a few changes to the line-up that played in the World Cup with some senior players being rested as well. A few players also lost their place with leg-spinner Rahul Chahar being one of them.

He was preferred in the World Cup squad shockingly over Yuzvendra Chahal but got to play only one match against Namibia which was a dead rubber. Chahar returned with the figures of 0/30 in his four overs and now finds himself out of the T20I squad with Chahal returning to the mix again. Having said that, Rahul Chahar has been picked in the India A squad for the South Africa tour to play three four-day matches.

Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar is not impressed with selectors for dropping Chahar. Gavaskar felt at least the leg-spinner will get to know the reason for his ouster from the squad. “They (Yuzvendra Chahal and Deepak Chahar) have been proven performers, they have got the experience as well. Them coming back into the team will certainly benefit the team.

“But Rahul Chahar will be wondering what he has done that he is not in the 16 that have been announced for the New Zealand series. He was good enough to be in the World Cup squad, he got one opportunity, gave away 7 and a half runs an over. He will certainly be wondering what he did wrong. And I hope the selection committee will actually tell him what he did is the reason that he is out of the squad,” he said while speaking to India Today.

Chakaravarthy also needs to be told why he was left out, says Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar asserted that even mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy should know the reason for not being picked for New Zealand series. The spinner didn’t have a good World Cup going wicketless in three matches he played. “Even Varun Chakravarthy needs to be told why he was not picked in the squad. Unless of course, he is not fit which we don’t know about, then he must be told.

“Only if somebody tells them the reason, they can go back and get better and then come back stronger. That will be the only way Indian cricket will get stronger,” Gavaskar added.
