India had a perfect Day 2, to begin with in the first Test against Australia in Adelaide. After getting bowled out for the overnight score of 250, the visitors came back hard at the home side by taking the first wicket without any score on board and then taking three quick wickets. Ishant Sharma gave India their first breakthrough by disturbing the timber of opener Aaron Finch in the third ball of the innings and then seasoned off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took over.

Ashwin, the most experienced member of the Indian bowling unit with over 300 Test wickets, ran through the Aussie top order, picking three of the four wickets they lost till the latest reports came in. He dismissed debutant opener Marcus Harris for 26 after he was caught by Murali Vijay at silly mid-off. Australia went into lunch at 57 for 2 but Ashwin struck in the very first over after the break.

Marsh drags a wide delivery onto his stumps

Left-hand batsman Shaun Marsh was still settling himself on the wicket when Ashwin invited the batsman to drive with a wide ball but Marsh ended up dragging the ball onto his stumps. This was the fifth time that Marsh fell to Ashwin at an average of 1.60. The Aussie can be called Ashwin’s bunny now for sure.

Here is the video of the dismissal:

Ashwin got his third scalp in the 40th over when the experienced Usman Khawaja nicked one to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant for 28 and Australia slumped to 87 for 4, almost mirroring India’s collapse on Day 1 of the match. Peter Handscomb and Travis Head were holding the hosts’ fortress for the fifth wicket till the latest reports came in with the former batting on 30-plus.

Earlier in the day, India failed to add any run to their overnight score of 250 for 9 as the batsman on strike Mohammed Shami fell to pacer Josh Hazlewood in the very first delivery of the day. Hazlewood finished as the most successful Australia bowler with 3 wickets for 52.

The extension of the Indian innings into the second day was made possible by Cheteshwar Pujara who scored 123 on the first day when every other Indian batsman tumbled. Comeback man Rohit Sharma was the second highest scorer for India with 37. Captain Virat Kohli managed just three.
