The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) might have a 11-7 with an abandoned match head-to-head lead over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). But this year, both teams are doing good and will be taking on each other at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, on Tuesday with a relaxed mindset. Both teams have won four out of their five games so far with KKR sitting atop the points table by the virtue of a better net run-rate. The CSK will though have a concern over Andre Russell, the Caribbean who has been middling the ball with monstrous success this season.
However, scenes from the yellow jerseys’ net sessions showed that they are in a good spirit ahead of the high-voltage clash that will one team going to the top of the points table. Bowling all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni were seen standing with the batting pads on and the former came forward and ‘felicitating’ his skipper with a black towel from behind. Veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh and bowling coach Lakshmipathy Balaji were also seen in the frame. Jadeja was seen in splits after putting the towel around Dhoni’s shoulders.
CSK lost to MI; KKR to DC
CSK had once a 5-1 lead over the KKR but the Kolkata-based franchise did well of late by making the rivalry an even one. The last 14 games have seen both teams winning seven apiece with the KKR winning the high-scoring final of the 2012 edition at the same venue under the captaincy of Gautam Gambhir. This year, while KKR lost to Delhi Capitals in a Super Over while the CSK lost to Mumbai Indians (MI) by 37 runs.
The CSK came back from serving two years of suspension last year after missing the 2016 and 2017 seasons and straightaway won their third title to equal the record of the MI led by Rohit Sharma. This year, too, they are looking strong to successfully defend their title while the KKR has found a massive powerhouse in Russell who is consistently doing the job for his team.
The likes of Jadeja and Harbhajan will have their tasks cut out on Tuesday evening.
