Mithali Raj, the Indian Women’s team skipper was one of the integral cogs in the team’s success in the recently concluded World Cup. However, despite her heroics, she still could not triumph over the derogatory mindset of the society. Mithali has been a victim of body-shaming and moral policing on social media, which indeed highlights the deep-rooted malaise in Indian society and the negative aspect of social media.

The 34-year-old found herself at the centre of undue attention on Wednesday as an innocuous selfie posted on Twitter had the moral police up in arms. Mithali posted an image wearing a spaghetti top to which many stated that it was unbecoming of an idol that she was. Earlier last month, Mithali was mocked for a photo of herself which she posted on Twitter. Her ‘mistake’ was that she did not ‘conceal’ the sweat on her dress.

As a measure of support and to raise voice against such malpractices, former Indian wicketkeeper Robin Uthappa took to Twitter to share a message. The 31-year-old posted, “Mithali Raj being treated badly by some silly minds. It’s disappointing to see our culture stuck in the same rut @M_Raj03 #MithaliRaj”

It was courtesy of Mithali’s leadership skills, that the Indian eves went extremely close to lifting their maiden 50 overs world cup. However, that was not to happen as hosts England eclipsed India in the finals to secure their 4th World Cup.

Following their return, the Indian team witnessed a warm welcome. Apart from a felicitation ceremony organized by Indian PM Narendra Modi in the national capital, most of the players have received separate gifts or remunerations from their respective states. Being dubbed as the dark horses, their spectacular performance in the quadrennial event had made them overnight heroes.
