Rohit Sharma and his fitness made the headlines over the last few weeks. He sustained a hamstring during the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and accordingly, wasn’t picked for the Australia tour. However, he later featured in the playoff matches for the Mumbai Indians (MI) leading them to the fifth title after which he was added to the Test squad. But to everyone’s surprise, he didn’t travel with the Indian team and instead returned home.

And now he has been ruled out of the first two Test matches against Australia. Rohit Sharma is set to be assessed on December 11 and then his availability for the last two Tests will be ascertained. Moreover, along with the rehab of the hamstring injury, India’s limited-overs vice-captain is working on getting leaner as well at the National Cricket Academy.

Moreover, a lighter body will also not increase pressure on the dodgy hamstring. “Unless the team physio gives a clean chit, a player can’t undergo a high-intensity fitness test. But if he is undergoing rehab on an injury in his lower body, he can work on his upper body’s conditioning and shed weight. A lighter body will ensure he doesn’t put much strain on the dodgy hamstring,” a BCCI source told to Times of India.

Rohit Sharma doesn’t want to take any chances

The year 2020 has been plagued with injuries for Rohit Sharma. He was ruled out of New Zealand tour midway after which lockdown happened and he didn’t get much of an opportunity to get fit. If the source is to be believed, the 33-year-old is not in a mood to rush things at the moment and is targeting to play for whole of next year without getting injured.

“Rohit doesn’t want to take any chance this time. He is very conscious about the fitness standards. He has been plagued by injuries last year. Then the lockdown happened before he got on with his IPL duties. He has been on the road for two years too. That didn’t really give him much of a chance to work on his fitness. Now, he wants to ensure he is in perfect shape and his body is ready to endure the rigours of non-stop cricket next year,” the source added.
