The sudden death of legendary Australian spinner Shane Warne left the entire cricketing fraternity in deep mourning and among those who condoled the death of the former cricketer was India captain Rohit Sharma.

Warne, who was aged 52, died of a suspected heart attack at his villa in Thailand. In a statement, it was revealed that the former cricketer was found unresponsive at his residence and despite the medical staff’s best of efforts, could not be revived. It was also said that the late individual’s family sought privacy and will give further details in due course.

Sharma, who is currently leading India in his first Test as captain against Sri Lanka in Mohali, took to Twitter saying he did not find words to react and was still not able to believe that the legend was no more.

“I’m truly lost for words here, this is extremely sad. An absolute legend and champion of our game has left us. RIP Shane Warne….still can’t believe it,” the 34-year-old ace batter said.

Sharma scored 29 runs in 28 balls in the first innings of the Test match after winning the toss and deciding to bat. The match also happened to be Virat Kohli’s 100th Test match.

Warne backed Rohit Sharma as India’s Test captain after Kohli quit

It was only in January that Warne had backed Sharma as India’s Test skipper after Virat Kohli quit the post after India’s 1-2 loss in the Test series in South Africa. The Australian expressed confidence that Sharma was capable of leading India in all three formats, something which he is doing now.

Warne was named as one of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Century. He picked more than 1,000 international wickets for Australia, was a member of Australia’s World Cup-winning squad in 1999 and was the first captain to win the Indian Premier League in 2008.
