The cricketing world is still in a state of shock after Cricket Australia (CA) banned Steve Smith for one year and also stripped him of captaincy. Also, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were charged by the Australian boards with similar punishments only for the latter to be spared for three fewer months compared to the other two. The cricketing fraternity thought that the bans were too harsh on the trio and supported them in their bad times. However, Rohit Sharma has come out in support for Smith who was gutted during the press conference earlier in the day.

Steve Smith literally broke down several times while fronting the media on Thursday and regretted his actions during the third Test in Cape Town last week. Even Bancroft apologised to the whole nation and the cricket fans across the world while speaking to the reporters for the first time since the saga was exposed. But the way they are being treated is not going down so well with many former cricketers as they have voiced their support for the cricketers.

Rohit’s statement

The Indian opener Rohit Sharma now has sympathised with Steve Smith after watching his highly emotional press conference. He took to Twitter to express his sentiments and believed that the way the Australian cricketer was treated at the airport in Johannesburg was not good. While he also went on to say that the spirit of the game is of the utmost importance, he appreciated that the trio accepted their mistake of trying to alter the condition of the ball on the field in Cape Town.

“The video of Steve Smith being escorted at the airport and his most recent press conference resonated with me. The spirit of the game is of utmost importance there’s no denying that. They made a mistake and they accepted it. It would be unfair of me to sit here and question the board’s decision but they are great players and I don’t think this should define them,” he tweeted.

This is a great gesture by the Indian vice-captain in the limited overs format and he will surely be missing his counterparts in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
