Popular Indian celebrities Sachin Tendulkar and Rekha are facing a lot of criticism for their non-activeness in Parliamentary issues. Their performances as nominees are being questioned due to their low attendance. Between a lengthy period of 1 June 2009 to 26 July 2017, both Sachin and Rekha’s attendance stands below 10 percent, according to PRS India.

Rekha’s attendance:

Both of them were appointed as members of the Upper House on April 27, 2012, and are currently going through their first terms. Rekha’s attendance is reported to be significantly low as it stands at 5 percent. The 62-year-old actress has kept herself away from parliamentary issues despite being a member. In the last five years, Rekha has not been a part of any discussion and chose not ask any questions. Her maximum attendance was 10 per cent during the Winter Session in 2013. In the 2013 Budget Session, she did not attend a single session.

Tendulkar’s attendance:

As far as the legendary Sachin Tendulkar is concerned, his attendance is slightly better than the iconic actress. Tendulkar has an attendance of 7 percent. If we take a closer look at Tendulkar’s performance in the last 5 years, he has asked 22 questions but has not involved himself in any debate. His maximum attendance is 16 per cent during the Budget Session in 2015. He did not attend a single session in 2012 Budget Session, 2012 Winter Session and 2013 Winter Session. The Little Master is a member of Standing Committee on Information Technology.

Samajwadi Party MP Naresh Agrawal has pointed fingers at both of them saying “They should resign if they are not interested in Parliament, they are hardly present.”

However, Tendulkar and Rekha have been given the privileges that a Parliamentarian enjoy. Each Parliamentarian gets a salary of Rs.50,000 per month during the whole term of office. Besides the cash, an MP is rewarded with a number of allowances which include medical, housing, telephone facilities etc and for regulating the payment of daily and travelling allowances under The Salary, Allowances and Pension of Members of Parliament Act, 1954.
