Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar had been one of the most destructive opening pairs in the history of Indian cricket. The duo also opened in the 2011 Cricket World Cup and was one of the primary reasons why the hosts won the tournament after a gap of 28 years. However, the partnership of the legends didn’t start on an auspicious note.

They also batted together a number of times in Test matches as well. Recently, the duo attended a chat show by the name of ‘What the Duck 3’, hosted by renowned comedian Vikram Sathaye. Both the cricketers rolled back the clock and remembered the interactions they exchanged during Viru’s initial days with the national team.

“He just shook my hand”- Sehwag on Sachin

“I remember when Viru first joined the team, he would not talk to me. Then I thought this can’t work, we need to talk to each other and if we are batting together I need to make him comfortable. So I told him let’s go get have some food.

Before going, I asked him what he liked. He said ‘Paaji, I am a vegetarian’. When I asked why, he revealed that he had been told at home that eating chicken makes you fat,” Tendulkar reminisced the time when he strained to come to terms with Viru.

“When I first met him, he just shook my hand and moved on. I thought to myself that I idolise this person and he just shook my hand and walked away. But later when I was a senior and met new players, I did the same, then I realised you cannot get close to a person before knowing him. I was very shy when I first joined the team,” Sehwag mentioned.

Both cricketers were tormenting factors for the opponents. The duo employed attacking approaches and hardly allowed the bowlers to settle into a rhythm. Following their somewhat jittery relation, they gelled well and notched tons of runs for their team.
