India managed to garner a lead of 27 runs after their first innings of the fourth Test against England at The Ageas Bowl in Southampton courtesy of a masterful knock of 132 runs from 257 deliveries by Cheteshwar Pujara. After having bowled out the Poms for 246, the visiting team was reeling with the score at 195/8, but Pujara telecasted an unflustered temperament to comfortably guide his team.

The Gujarat-born batsman had gone through a lacklustre run of form ever since he started playing in England this year, starting with his county stint with Yorkshire. After a string of low scores, he scored a masterful half-century in the second innings of the third Test at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. Recently, Sanjay Bangar, the Indian batting coach, lauded Pujara’s unfussy approach while batting.

Birmingham is too much in the past

“Right from where he got in to play at Lord’s to how he batted in Nottingham and whatever he did out here, he showed a lot of composure, clarity of thought and great discipline in his judgement outside off,” Bangar was quoted as saying in Hindustan Times.

The 30-year-old was sidelined for the opening Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham and Bangar reckons that he had technical glitches, which needed to be worked upon. Moreover, he also talked about the technical changes Pujara brought about in his batting and mentioned that the batsman has been rewarded for his relentless hard work.

“Birmingham is too much in the past. He was coming off a rough patch and also he hadn’t really scored as many runs as he’d have liked in the last 10-11 innings for India. He was struggling… certain areas had to be worked on.

He had to get his balance right and also had to get his footwork right. Those were the two areas we worked on as a support-staff group — including Ravi Shastri and myself. It’s heartening the work he put in was duly rewarded,” the former Indian cricketer added.
