All is not well in the camp of two-time Ranji Trophy champions Bengal. The mood was not happy after the side’s poor show in the recently concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy and more questions came up after former India opener Arun Lal was appointed as the team’s mentor despite the presence of coach Sairaj Bahutule. The latest addition to the controversy is the allegation by captain Manoj Tiwary that the senior selectors did not consult him while picking the squad for the tournament kicking off on November 1.

Tiwary, Bahutule on notice?

Tiwary also said that he was shocked to know the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) putting him and Bahutule on notice for the team’s first two matches. The 32-year-old cricketer said nobody in the CAB told him about it and he came to know from the media. He said he was made the captain for the entire season just a few months back and was wondering what could have made the authorities take such drastic step. Bengal will take on Himachal Pradesh at Amtar from November 1.

Speaking about the selectors picking the squad without consulting him, Tiwary told Times of India, “I was not consulted by any of the selectors. The coach read out the names to me over phone.” He said it is true that Bengal’s performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy was not good but refused to admit that only the captain and coach shouldn’t be held responsible for that.

Defending his way of handling things, Tiwary said he and Bahutule always speak to the players individually for that is something important which he had missed in the initial days of his career. “I know how important it is to talk to the players and I make it a point to come out of my comfort zone to keep communication channels open at all times,” he said.

The Bengal captain also said that he knew who is behind the problems and warned that if the person (who, according to him, is not a cricketer) is not removed right away, it would affect the entire team.

Bengal squad for Ranji Trophy 2018-19:
