The swashbuckling left-hander of India, Shikhar Dhawan, has been one of the best openers in the recent times for the team across all the formats. While he has blown hot and cold in the Tests, Gabbar has ruled over the bowlers in the limited overs format scoring runs at will. Dhawan will also be key for the Men in Blue in the World Cup next year which will be held in England. However, he has now revealed the fact that he had almost given up his cricketing career.

Currently, he is plying his trade in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). His team is in the final of the tournament and the southpaw will play a key role in the title clash against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Dhawan is also in good touch with the bat and has amassed 470 runs in 15 outings at a strike-rate of 139.70.

Thought of giving up cricket

Shikhar Dhawan recently appeared in the show ‘Breakfast with Champions’ which is hosted by Gaurav Kapur. The 32-year-old revealed that he was about to give up his cricketing career even before it started feeling that the game isn’t his thing. “I was fond of playing cricket since my childhood itself. The most important thing is I’ve played the sports like Football and Volleyball apart from cricket. Then I played for Delhi U16 team an they dropped me only after a couple of matches,” he said.

“After being axed, I thought cricket is not for me and decided to join the business of my father as I never liked studying at all. Then I became the salesman for one day and it was enough for me. Then my coach called me to play and I made a lot runs to eventually play India U17 and I never looked back from there on,” he added. As it stands now, he is one of the most successful openers for India and will be looking to scale a few more heights in the next few years.
