‘Calling’ is the basic fundamental that you are always taught since a very young age while catching a ball. It helps maintain the clarity among the fielders, prevents collisions and helps take important wickets. However, Shoaib Malik, who is a fine fielder, forgot this fundamental once. Both him and Saeed Ajmal were caught up in a tangle and ended up spilling one of the easiest catches.

It was in a game against the Windies, when the duo, due to lack of clarity failed to hold on to a catch. Saeed Ajmal, who seemed ready to grab the catch of Chris Gayle in that game just let it go expecting Malik to cling on to it. However, the ball ended up landing in between both of them and they became a butt of all the jokes.

Malik has a laugh over the incident with Virat Kohli

In an episode of ‘Voice of Cricket’, Malik narrated what happened during the entire incident. He started off with the Champions Trophy 2017 final first. He along with a few other Pakistani players, was seen having a laugh with Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh during the presentation ceremony. He revealed that it was over this incident that all of them were laughing.

Malik said that Virat asked him about what Saeed Ajmal said to him after the ball fell in between both the fielders. “Virat yeh puch raha tha, catch to theek hai aap logon ke beech mein gir gaya. Lekin aapko Saeed Ajmal ne kya bola?,” Malik quoted Kohli as saying.

“Catch to khair gir gaya us waqt. Woh tha bhi Chris Gayle ka catch. Aur woh hame peet bhi rahe the. Main usko kaha, ‘yaar! aapne joh yeh position banayi, ki mein catch karne laga hu, toh aap phir haath kyun peeche kar liye?,” Malik said he asked Ajmal. [Translation: It was the catch of Gayle that was spilt back then and he was going hard after us. I asked Ajmal why he got into that catching position if he had to bail out at the last moment.]

“Woh kheta hai, mein aapke neeche iss liye baitha hua tha ki agar aap se catch chhot jayi, toh mein use neech se pakad lu,” Malik quoted Ajmal as saying to him after the drop. [Translation: Ajmal said that he was backing up for me. He said if in case, I drop the catch, he was waiting to grab it immediately.]

Later, Malik asked Ajmal why he didn’t get hold of it even though he had left it.
