Marnus Labuschagne is generally someone, who fields at the close-in positions. Moreover, he tries to be vocal in order to cheer his teammates up and most importantly, put pressure on the opposition batsmen. During the final day’s play of the Sydney Test, Rishabh Pant and Cheteshwar Pujara were going great guns, putting on a massive partnership of 148 runs.

It was Nathan Lyon who separated the duo, getting rid of Pant, who was looking ominous on 97 with 12 fours and three sixes. Pant tried to go for an ambitious stroke after which Pat Cummins took a decent catch inside the circle. Thereafter, Labuschagne started saying a few words, encouraging and asking Lyon to pick up more wickets.

“That is going to rag with the new … That is going to rag with the new ball, Garry Lyon). You’re going to get both wickets, Garry,” Labuschagne was quoted as saying soon after the wicket.

But then, Marnus was reminded to keep quiet. “Shut up Marnus, it’s coming back to you,” said one of his teammates.

David Warner also started ripping in. “Don’t leave it in the sheds Marnus, don’t leave it in the sheds. It’s amazing, you get a wicket Painey and Marnus doesn’t shut up. Got to be consistent Marnus, talk all day please,” Warner said.

Marnus Labuschagne having a good time

Labuschagne has had a decent time thus far in the Border Gavaskar Trophy. He got a few decent scores in the first two Tests at the Adelaide Oval and the Melbourne Cricket Ground. In the Sydney Test, the right-hander has shown his class, getting runs for his team in critical situations.

In the first innings, he scored 91 runs, batting at number three, and put forth a partnership of 100 runs with Steve Smith, who entertained one and all with his 27th Test century. He eventually got out to Ravindra Jadeja in the 71st over.

In the second innings, Labuschagne again came to the party and scored 73 runs off 188 balls with nine fours. This time around, he perished to Navdeep Saini, who made his Test debut after foraying into international cricket back in 2019.
