Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is is mulling the idea of roping in the services of the former Pakistan cricketer Mushtaq Ahmed as the spin bowling coach. Ever since the retirement of the legendary Muttiah Muralitharan, the team has immensely struggled to find an able replacement for him. Though Rangana Herath has held fort in the longest format of the game, even he is almost 40-years-old and is likely to hang his boots soon. However, this step should come as a welcome and refreshing change in the support staff for the Sri Lankan team.
The team endured their worst year in the cricketing history in 2017 when they lost almost every series and the only shining light came in the end when they managed to breach Pakistan’s fortress by defeating them in the two-match Test series in UAE. However, the string of losses continued in 2018 as well before beating Bangladesh in all the formats in their own den.
New support staff to be hired soon
Ever since Chandika Hathurusingha has taken over as the head coach of the Sri Lanka, things have been stabilised a bit and the team is looking settled nicely. According to the reports in The News, Mushtaq Ahmed is the strong contender for the post of spin bowling coach. He is regarded as one of the best spinners in the history of cricket and has expressed his interest to don the coaching hat. He has previously worked with England and Pakistan as well and has experience in the field. SLC is also searching for the fielding coach ahead of their next series.
Sri Lanka is set to tour West Indies in the last week of May where they will lock horns with the home side in the three-match Test series. The first match will commence on June 6 and the tour will end on the 27th of the same month.
