Sri Lanka won the Test series against South Africa by 2-0 at home. But the victory was marred by the news of a Norwegian tourist accusing Danushka Gunathilaka of raping her along with his friend in a hotel in Colombo. her claims sent shockwaves in the cricketing fraternity and the left-handed batsman was soon suspended pending an investigation by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) as the board also held him responsible for breaching the code of conduct.
However, they have suspended him now for the six international matches for breaching the Player Code of Conduct and Contractual Obligation. The cricketer will now miss the upcoming five-match ODI series against South Africa which is set to commence on July 29 in Dambulla. He will also miss the only T20 International which will conclude South Africa’s tour on August 14.
More details about the suspension
SLC has given a detailed explanation for the six-match suspension of Danushka Gunathilaka according to Cricbuzz. He has been suspended for three matches for violating the contract that he has entered to with the cricket board and the remaining three-match suspension was handed over to him for the one-year sentence which he has been serving since October 18, 2017, for breaching the player contract.
The 27-year-old will not be paid for the second Test against the rainbow nation as he had breached the contract during the course of the game. Also, no bonus or payments of the game will be given to him. He was suspended for six matches last year in October as well for skipping the training session after partying late night.
However, his suspension was later halved by SLC and the same has been imposed on him now for his ‘misconduct’. The talented cricketer has often been in and out of the side for unwanted reasons and should concentrate on his career now.
