Afghanistan pulled off their most significant win on Tuesday, June 25, at the Arnos Vale Ground, as they defeated Bangladesh to secure a place in the semifinals of the T20 World Cup 2024. After the monumental victory, captain Rashid Khan took to social media to express his elation.
The Blue Tigers reached the Super Eight stage after beating Papua New Guinea, Uganda, and mighty New Zealand. In the Super Eights, they lost to India but registered back-to-back wins against Australia and Bangladesh to progress to the semifinals for the first time in a World Cup. Afghanistan's equation to reach the semifinals became straightforward after India defeated Australia on Monday. To make it through to the semis, Rashid and Co. needed to beat Bangladesh and they managed to do so by eight runs (DLS method) in a rain-curtailed affair.
Following the special win, Rashid Khan posted a picture with India captain Rohit Sharma and wrote the name of a popular Bollywood song "Bambai se aaya mera dost" from the movie "Aap ki Khatir" in the caption. Interestingly, Rohit was the Player of the Match in the India versus Australia clash after scoring a swashbuckling half-century.
Talking about the low-scoring thriller, Afghanistan won the toss and chose to bat first. They got off to a sedate start on a difficult pitch as the in-form opening pair of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran added 59 runs inside 11 overs. The wicketkeeper-batter top-scored with a 55-ball 43. The middle-order batters couldn't get going for the Afghans but a 10-ball 19 not out from Rashid helped them set a target of 116 in 20 overs. However, it was revised to 114 in 19 overs after a rain delay.
