Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Gujarat Titans (GT) locked horns in the second match of Sunday's doubleheader of the IPL 2024 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Mohali. PBKS' stand-in skipper, Sam Curran, won the toss and opted to bat first. PBKS failed to defend their 143-run target and lost the game by

Punjab made a favourable start with Curran and Prabhsimran Singh forming a solid partnership of 52 runs for the opening wicket. However, their momentum was halted when GT spinners ran riot, restricting the hosts' run flow. The Afghan duo of Noor Ahmad and Rashid Khan made significant breakthroughs after the powerplay, followed by a stellar show by Indian spinner Sai Kishore. It's worth noting that even Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma, who had been key figures in the Punjab squad, failed to excel well with the bat.

Kishore finished with impressive figures of 4/33 as they bundled out PBKS for a below-par score of 142 in their allotted 20 overs. Noor and Mohit Sharma claimed two wickets each while conceding over 50 runs collectively. Notably, Prabhsimran top-scored for Punjab, scoring 35 off 21 deliveries, featuring three boundaries and as many maximums.

During the below-par chase, GT encountered their first blow losing the wicket of Wriddhiman Saha in the fourth over. Gill attempted to anchor the innings but fell short of 35 runs before Kagiso Rabada took a crucial catch off Liam Livingstone's delivery. Adding to GT's batting vows, David Miller was cheaply dismissed for just four runs, leaving the visitors at 77/3 in 11.5 overs. Meanwhile, Sai Sudharsan, designated as Impact Player, failed to make any impact as he left the crease after scoring just 31 runs off 34 deliveries.

Rahul Tewatia was the sole batter who showed promise for GT, batting down the order. He remained unbeaten with a quickfire 36 off a mere 18 balls, featuring seven boundaries as GT successfully chased down the target in 19.1 overs, thereby sealing a three-wicket win. Despite the defeat, PBKS displayed promise by dragging the game to the final over which also indicated the current form of GT's batters. Additionally, Harshal Patel emerged as PBKS' standout bowler who finished with excellent figures of 3/15 in his three-over spell.
