Joburg Super Kings skipper Faf du Plessis took an absolute blinder to dismiss Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s Roelof van der Merwe in match 17 of the SA20 2023 at the St. Georges Park in Gqeberha on Saturday, January 21. It was a well-judged catch from the Super Kings skipper that left the batter as well as the viewers shell-shocked.
The spectacular incident happened in the penultimate over of Sunrisers Eastern Cape's innings which was bowled by Gerald Coetzee. On the second delivery, van der Merwe attempted to smash one into the stands. However, he failed to time the ball well and at one point it appeared as if the mistime no-look shot might just make it to the boundary on one bounce.
But, that was not to be as Faf du Plessis who never took his eyes off the ball showed great commitment by sprinting behind the ball that was travelling to the ropes and ended up taking a blinder after putting in a full-fledged dive.
“That is absolutely outstanding as a catch. Faf du Plessis has shown what he can do with the ground fielding,” exclaimed Pommie Mbangwa on air.

It was indeed an outstanding day on the field for the veteran South Africa batter who took a couple of catches and also effected the run out of Sarel Erwee.
Coming back to the contest, du Plessis called it right at the toss and decided to bowl first. His decision was spot on as his bowlers showcased a splendid performance to bundle the Sunrisers Eastern Cape out for just 127 runs in the penultimate over. Only Adam Rossington (40) showed some resistance with the bat for Super Kings.
In reply, Joburg Super Kings successfully registered a hard-fought five-wicket win in the final over and thereby, snapped the Sunrisers' winning streak.
