Pakistan has reached the finals of the T20 World Cup after 13 years since winning the tournament in 2009. The Men in Green put on a splendid show at the SCG to knock out the Blackcaps and will play the winner of the second semi-final fixture between India and England in the T20 World Cup 2022 final on Sunday at the MCG.

Earlier, New Zealand opted to bat first after winning the toss and Finn Allen perished in the very first over after hitting a boundary. Kane Williamson and Devon Conway managed to take their time initially with a lot of singles and it backfired in the end with the wicket of Conway through a run-out while trying to sneak in a single. Glenn Phillips could not produce the same magic like his earlier century in the tournament and was dismissed for just six runs.  

It needed a steady partnership from Williamson and Daryl Mitchell to get the innings going and the pair added 68 for the fourth wicket. Williamson missed out on a half-century by just four runs in the 17th over while Mitchell and Neesham got New Zealand to 152 for 4 in their 20 overs with a back end flourish. Mitchell’s unbeaten 53 off 35 balls played a big part in the Kiwis finishing off well while Shaheen Afridi was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 24 in his four overs.

Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan provide a blazing start

In reply, the Pakistan openers Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam put on a 105-run partnership for the first wicket and brought down the required rate to a relatively easier one. Azam was back to form with a 42-ball 53 while Rizwan used the powerplay restrictions to keep the scoring rate on the upper side. Once Babar was removed, new batter Mohammad Haris straightaway hit few boundaries to release the pressure.  

Despite Rizwan getting dismissed for 57 in the 17th over, the job was already done for Pakistan while Haris and Shan Masood kept their cool to finish the game. The New Zealand team dropped catches which did not help their cause and ended by losing the game by seven wickets.
