Former Afghanistan skipper Asghar Afghan believes the inclusion of head coach Jonathan Trott ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022 will help the squad in the long run. The national side began their campaign against Jos Buttler-led England and lost the game by a margin of five wickets.

Mohammad Nabi’s Afghanistan were put to bat first and toppled against the English bowlers as Sam Curran wreaked absolute havoc with his fifer. The side appeared rattled by the English bowlers and could not read the conditions of the pitch as well.

Asghar Afghan speaks on Afghanistan head coach

"Trott ek senior player reh chuke hain, kaafi cricket khel chuke hain aur unko pata hai weakness aur strong area jo hai. Sab unko pata hai. Magar yeh ke usko apply karne ka kaam who players ka hi hai, coach batayega sab kuch lekin apply karna who players ka kaam hai (Trott has been a senior player and has played cricket for long time and he can identify the strengths and weakness. He knows everything. But it is the players who will need to put the effort and apply it, the coach will only tell you but to apply is the players work),” said Afghan on ‘Run Ki Runneeti’ show on CricTracker.

The cricketer described the importance of playing in the Australian soil and further explained the presence of coach Trott in the squad for their campaign in Australia but also stated that the players will need to put the effort.

"Main pehle bhi yeh bola raha tha ke jaise humara Asia Cup khatam hua, hume chahiye tha ki hum Australia mein ho kyunki hum wahan cricket nahi khel chuke hain. Coaching staff ko iss baat pe gaur karna chahiye tha. But abhi jo thodi bohot preparation hui hai, coach ne bataya hoga England batters kahan se weak aur kahan se strong hain, lekin apply karna player ka kaam hai (I have said this before that when our Asia Cup campaign got done with, we should have been playing in Australia because we haven’t played there. The coaching staff should have taken cognizance of this. But for whatever preparation that is done, the coach must have told the weaknesses and strengths of the English batters but the players will have to apply it),” added Afghan.
