During the high-level military press briefing on Operation Sindoor, Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, Director General of Military Operations (DGMO), took out time to acknowledge Virat Kohli’s retirement from Test cricket. When the armed forces were revealing the details of India’s response to recent airspace violations and terror infrastructure in Pakistan, Lt. Gen. Ghai gave a special mention to the cricketer.
The 36-year-old announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 12, just before India’s squad for the England tour was to be finalised. Kohli ended his illustrious Test career with 123 matches, 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, and 30 centuries. As captain, he led India in 68 Tests, winning 40, making him the most successful captain in India’s Test history. Lt. Gen. Ghai revealed that the Delhi-born is his favourite cricketer.
“Maybe today I should talk about cricket too, because I saw that Virat Kohli has retired from Test cricket. Like many Indians, he is my favourite cricketer as well. (Aaj shayad cricket ki baat bhi karni chahiye, kyuki mai dekh raha tha Virat Kohli ne Test cricket se retirement leli. Kayi bhaartiyo ki tarah mere bhi favourite cricketer hain),” said Lt. General Rajiv Ghai as quoted by India Today.
Targeting our airfields and logistics is way too tough: DGMO Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai
The General also took inspiration from the legendary Ashes series of 1974-75 and compared the air defence system to the challenging Australian pace duo of Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson.
"Targeting our airfields and logistics is way too tough. I believe it was the 1970s. During that time, there was a famous Ashes series between England and Australia. At that time, Australia's greatest fast bowlers, Jeff Thomson and Dennis Lille, tore into the England batting line-up. Australians, at that time, came up with a saying: Ashes to Ashes, dust to dust, if Thommo doesn't get ya, Lillee surely must. If you see the layers, you'll understand what I am trying to say. Even if you crossed all the layers, one of the layers of this grid system will hit you," he added.
