Virat Kohli’s non-stop heroics have bowled over the entire cricketing world. The 29-year-old Indian captain slammed records on Wednesday during the second ODI against the Windies in Vishakhapatnam as he entered the 10,000 runs club in the 50-overs format. He became the quickest to make it to the club, smashing the record of his compatriot Sachin Tendulkar, by taking 53 matches and 54 innings fewer than the former great.

Kohli also slammed his 37th ODI hundred in the match and went a spot closer to table topper Tendulkar who has 49 tons in this format. It was his second consecutive hundred in the series and he travelled from 9,000 to 10,000 runs at a lightning speed, taking just 11 innings. India though could not capitalise on his ton and tied the game. The hosts now lead the series 1-0 with the third match due to be played in Pune on October 27.

Among those who were left pleasantly stunned by Kohli’s phenomenal form with the willow is former India captain Sourav Ganguly. The only left-handed among the five Indian batsmen to have scored 10,000 ODI runs, Ganguly said he did not have words to describe how he felt after seeing Kohli’s superhuman efforts.

Speaking to India TV, the 46-year-old said: “I am at a loss of words to describe Virat Kohli‘s performance. The wicket was different today, conditions were different, but he changed the entire game. It was a fantastic knock. I don’t have enough words.”

Ganguly third quickest to the 10k club

Ganguly himself is the third fastest Indian as well as among the 13 batsmen who have scored 10,000 runs in the ODIs. He took 272 matches to achieve the feat but although former Australian captain Ricky Ponting also took the same number of games, Ganguly reached home playing three innings lesser (263 to Ponting’s 266). The two other Indians in the list are Rahul Dravid (309 matches and 287 innings) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (320 matches and 273 innings).
