With Kuldeep Yadav added to the India squad for the five-match Test series against England, one cannot help but think that the chinaman will play ahead of seasoned off-spinner R Ashwin. While the debate rages on and the first Test in Edgbaston around the corner, Sourav Ganguly, the former India skipper has also seemingly joined in on the debate.

Sourav Ganguly, arguably one of the most successful captains India has ever seen has gone on to state that the safe option would be to deploy Ashwin ahead of Kuldeep. While the latter remains a raw commodity in Tests, it is clear that Ashwin’s credentials in Test cricket is certainly there for all to see. With 300 wickets to his name, Ganguly has his money on Ashwin playing ahead of Kuldeep.

“You can’t let him (Ashwin) fade away. 300 wickets is not a matter of joke. It’s a common trend that what’s not playing is probably better but it’s not the case sometimes,” said Sourav Ganguly in a video to Cricbuzz.

Ashwin deserves his place in the side, reckons Ganguly

It is also important to note Ashwin brings in the batting element, something that most Indian spinners have lacked in the past. Ashwin boasts of a bevy of half-centuries and a string of tons to his name, something that almost makes him invaluable to the side. However, the former India skipper went on to reiterate that Kuldeep would certainly have his chance when it comes to playing Test cricket for his country.

“Ashwin has a place in the side, he will reinvent himself because he has been challenged, he has felt competition in the squad. He knows Kuldeep is up for his Test place, which will happen very shortly if India wins the T20Is and ODIs (analysis from before the start of the tour), so he will reinvent,” Ganguly said.

“You saw the leg spin in IPL and he will get better. People must realize that 300 wickets don’t come like that, so he deserves a lot more opportunities,” he added.
