Former India captain Sourav Ganguly on Saturday congratulated Rohit Sharma and his India side over winning the Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates and expressed hope that the dashing opening batsman will be back to India’s Test side soon. India beat a spirited Bangladesh by 3 wickets in a thrilling final in Dubai on Friday to lift their seventh Asia Cup title.

Rohit was picked as India’s stand-in captain in place of Virat Kohli who was rested after a gruelling England series and the former had an unbeaten run in the tournament. Under his leadership, India humiliated arch-rivals Pakistan twice; defeated Bangladesh as many times (including the final) and beat Hong Kong. The only game India could not win was against Afghanistan which was tied but the champions were led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni in that game.

‘The day not far’

Ganguly posted a tweet on Saturday morning saying the win by Rohit and his team was great and added that he gets surprised every time he sees the right-handed batsman’s name not featuring in India’s Test team. He said the day is not far away when Rohit will be back into the reckoning for Tests.

The former southpaw’s wish was not fulfilled though as the Indian squad for the upcoming Windies series was announced on Saturday evening and there was no Rohit Sharma in that. Even Rohit’s dashing partner in the limited-over formats Shikhar Dhawan was axed, keeping in mind his poor yields in the recently held Test series in England.

The debate over Rohit’s Test career has often reached a high pitch although the cricketer hasn’t featured in a Test match since his ordinary show in South Africa back in January. The 31-year-old batsman hasn’t even been included in the longer format for junior teams also, which is seen by many as the end of the road for his Test career.

During India’s tour of South Africa earlier this year, Ganguly himself had raised questions over the overseas records of Rohit and Dhawan. Though he slammed a couple of centuries in his first two innings in Tests, Rohit failed to maintain the momentum in the longer format and has managed only 1,479 runs in 25 matches so far at an average of below 40.
