We have often referred the South African cricket team as ‘Proteas’. But what is the reason for this name? Protea cynaroides or the King Protea flower is the national flower of South Africa. It is the same flower which is displayed in the logo of the South African Cricket team. The Proteas’ have now got a new ODI kit. The colour scheme is the same with a green body and yellow borders.

But a Giant Protea or King Protea is displayed on the front side of the jersey, which gives it a unique look. South Africa currently holds the pole position in ODI Team Rankings. But they never quite managed to scale their game at par with the expectations of the fans at a big stage. They have not won a World Cup or a World T20 yet. Their only success at a major ICC event came way back in 1998 when they won the Champions Trophy.

They defeated West Indies to clinch the trophy which was then named as ICC KnockOut Tournament or Wills International Cup. The eight edition of the Champions Trophy will commence from 1st of June in England. South African skipper AB de Villiers said that his boys are desperate to win the tournament.

Owing to their tendency to ‘choke’ at the big state despite having a formidable team, the Proteas have earned themselves the tag of ‘chokers’. But AB de Villiers & Co. are desperate to crush that tag. They are placed in Group B alongside three Asian teams. The other three teams in their group are defending champions India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. They will begin their campaign on 3rd June against Sri Lanka.

Here is the squad of South Africa for Champions Trophy 2017

AB de Villiers (C), Hashim Amla, Farhaan Behardien, Jean-Paul Duminy, Quinton de Kock (wk), Faf du Plessis, Keshav Maharaj, David Miller, Morne Morkel, Chris Morris, Wayne Parnell, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada and Imran Tahir.
