By the end of day two, Bangladesh are inching towards an innings defeat against South Africa as they were bowled out for just 147 in their first innings and were enforced to follow-on. The Proteas declared their first innings at 573/4 after Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis also completing their hundreds.
Here we look at all the stats and records created during the day’s play.
1 – South African innings is the first instance in Test cricket where four players scored centuries in the same innings in a Test match in South Africa. Overall, this was only the 5th such instance in South African FC cricket. Last of the previous four instances was recorded last month at Bloemfontein only when four Knights’ batsmen scored hundreds in their 1st innings against Cape Cobras.
2 – This is only the 2nd instance for South Africa when four of their batsmen scored centuries in the same innings in Test cricket. The other such instance was in 2005 against Windies at St John’s.
3 – Bloemfontein is the 3rd venue to produce four centurions in an innings in consecutive in first-class matches. Delhi’s Feroz Shah Kotla in 1988/89 and Taunton in 2007 are the other two where this feat has been recorded. Knights had four centurions in their innings against Cape Cobras in the last FC game played at this venue last month.
4 – Number of instances including South African 1st innings where four out of top five batsmen scored centuries. Four of Pakistan’s top five scored tons against Bangladesh at Multan in 2001 while four of Australia’s top five did the same against Windies in 2015 at Melbourne. India’s top four scored hundred against Bangladesh at Dhaka in 2007.
6 – Number of five-wicket hauls in Test cricket for Kagiso Rabada. No South African player has picked up more than two 5-fers in Tests since Rabada’s Test debut in November 2015. In this period, James Anderson (6) is only pace bowler other than Rabada to take more than three 5-fers.
15 – Hashim Amla now has been a part of 15 double century stands in Test cricket. Only Jacques Kallis (20), Sachin Tendulkar (18) and Ricky Ponting (17) were part of more such stands.
28 – Number of centuries in Test cricket for Hashim Amla. He now has the 2nd most number of centuries for South Africa after Jacques Kallis (45) in Test cricket. Amla went past Graeme Smith (27) with this hundred.
113 – Balls Hashim Amla needed for completing his century. This is his 2nd fastest Test century after the 87-ball hundred against Australia in Perth (2012). This is also the fastest Test hundred for a South African against Bangladesh. Dean Elgar needed 116 balls for his ton in this game. Graeme Smith scored a hundred off 127 balls against the Bangladesh in 2008 at Chittagong.
