The recent antics of the Australian team have taken the cricket world by surprise. The ball tampering case in the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town has not gone down too well for the visitors. The immediate effects of the same were seen on the penultimate day of the Test when skipper Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner relinquished their positions for the Test.
Soon after the match, the ICC imposed severe announcements on the Australian captain. Steve Smith was slapped a match ban, while Cameron Bancroft, the man who actually tampered the ball, was given three demerit points. And now, as per the recent reports in the Sydney Herald, things could be worse for the visitors when they take the field at the Wanderers, Johannesburg. The venue is set to host the final Test of the four match series.
Warner could get banned too
Reportedly, vice-captain David Warner is also expected to be handed a match ban. Hence, in all likelihood, he might lose out on his position in the final Test as well. David Warner was lucky to have escaped the impositions given by the ICC after the third Test. But now, as the reports suggest, there could be more reprimands for the Australian players.
Cricket Australia, who have been deeply disturbed by these acts, are yet to give their call and verdict on the issue. The CA is expected to give their ruling on the case on the coming Wednesday. And it is expected that Smith and Warner could face severe heat for their involvements in the ‘leadership group’.
Furthermore, the CA is continuing their investigations and are likely to find out who all were involved in the case. Earlier in the press conference, Steve Smith had referred to a group of people who knew what was brewing up in the team. He had referred to those people as the ‘leadership group’. Smith, however, had maintained his stance on not revealing the names of those players.
