South Africa defeated Bangladesh by a huge margin of 332 runs in the second Test played at St. George’s Park in Gqeberha (the newly renamed city from Port Elizabeth).

The match began in controversial circumstances as the South African captain Dean Elgar asked Bangladesh to ‘harden up’ after receiving the complaints regarding sledging. Elgar began the match by scoring 70 in 89 balls while Keegan Petersen, Temba Bavuma, and Keshav Maharaj also registered half-centuries to their name, along with sizeable contributions from all other batters, which helped South Africa to score 453.

The Bangladeshi response was feebler than the first Test, largely due to the that game’s centurion Mahmudul Hasan Joy getting out for a duck. Despite Tamim Iqbal, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Yasir Ali getting starts, none of them could convert it big as they were bowled out for 217. South Africa chose not to enforce follow on and quickly amassed 176 runs before declaring, setting a target of 413.

Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer reduced Bangladesh to 27/3 at the end of day three and the threat of a collapse like the first Test was looming on Bangladesh, and it indeed happened again as Maharaj finished with seven wickets and Harmer finished with three wickets to wrap up Bangladesh for 80.

Here are some important stats from South Africa versus Bangladesh 2nd Test:

5South Africa‘s first innings was only the fifth instance in Test cricket where the top-9 batters of a team scored 20 or more runs. The last such case was back in 1979, by West Indies against Australia in Melbourne.

– This is the first time COVID-19 substitutes were used in Test cricket as Glenton Stuurman and Khaya Zondo replaced Sarel Erwee and Wiaan Mulder at the start of Day 4.

3 – Khaya Zondo became the third player to make his Test debut in between the match, as a substitute player. The first two players were Marnus Labuschagne (as a concussion substitute in 2019) and Brian Mudzinganyama (also as a concussion substitute in 2020).

2 – Only the second time a pair of spinners opened the bowling and took all ten wickets to fall in a Test innings. Both of them were recorded by the pair of Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer in this series.

150 – Total wickets by Keshav Maharaj in his Test career. He became the first South African left-arm bowler to reach the milestone of 150 Test wickets. The closest South African leg-spinner is Paul Adams, with 134 Test wickets.

27 – Total wickets taken by spinners in this Test. This the highest number of wickets taken by spinners in a Test match in South Africa. The previous best was 23 wickets in the South Africa versus Australia Test in Durban in 1936.

332 – South Africa won by 332 runs, which is now the largest victory in terms of runs achieved in Tests at St. George’s Park, Gqeberha. The previous best was South Africa’s 323-run win against Australia in 1970.

2 – Keshav Maharaj is only the second spinner to win the Player of the Series Award in a Test series on South African soil. The first was Graeme Swann in the 2009-10 series against South Africa.

14 – Total Tests played by South Africa against Bangladesh, winning 12 and drawing two. Even those two drawn Tests were severely impacted by rain, with under 200 overs bowled in both matches.
