South African batsman to lead the Highveld Lions in domestic season

Temba Bavuma, the South African middle-order batsman, has been selected to captain the Highveld Lions side in the upcoming domestic season. The 28-year old played for the Cape Cobras in the previous season. Stephen Cook, who captained the Lions in the four-day and the One Day fixtures, resigned from the role earlier and Bavuma’s appointment has come in the wake of the same reason.

Rassie van der Dussen has been anointed as the vice-captain of the team. The side finished at the bottom of the table in the Sunfoil series and will be looking to make amends for a disappointing outing last time around. Meanwhile, the right-hander sounded delighted on rejoining his old team and is eyeing to make the stint count.

“I have always been eager to achieve this at some point in time and am grateful that the board has seen it fitting to give me this opportunity now. Being back at the Lions has been phenomenal and now I will get an opportunity to play a bigger and more meaningful role,” Bavuma was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo while expressing his gratitude towards the management.

“We are set on securing silverware in the next season and with the team leadership in place, we can now start taking the next steps towards that. Both Temba and Rassie have immense leadership skills that we strongly believe are the right combination when it comes to the execution of the team’s preparation and also in guiding the team culture,” Greg Fredericks, the Lions CEO quoted.

The Proteas will play a couple of Tests versus Sri Lanka next month and Bavuma was included in the squad. He made his debut in 2014 and has played 29 Tests since then in which he has managed 1395 runs at an average of 34.87 with one century to his name.
