After their fifth match of the 2019 World Cup in England and Wales, Pakistan were mostly dead and buried, a number of people thought in those directions and the netizens couldn’t have been blamed. Nothing was going down well for Sarfaraz Ahmed and Co as the Men in Green’s campaign kept going into shambles. The world was coming down on them and even reports of a rift among the team members emerged.
Their rivalry against India is an age-old one and after the 89-run defeat on June 16 at the Old Trafford in Manchester, the angry fans tore apart the Pakistan team with brickbats. The supporters even went on to hurl abuses at their players, blaming them for not keeping up with the desired levels of fitness, and instead resorting to junk food. To add insult to injury, a fan considered Sarfaraz’s physical structure to that of a ‘pig’.
Even Shoaib Malik and his better-half Sania Mirza came under fire for going to a Sheesha place prior to their match versus India. The video of the same was released and the fans lashed out. The situation worsened to such an extent that Shoaib and Sania had to come up with stern replies to the critics. It won’t be wrong to say that Pakistan was desperate to find the light at the end of the tunnel.
Pakistan coming into its own
However, the rub of the green is slowly but surely started going in favour of the national team. Like a phoenix from the ashes, Sarfaraz’s men roared at the iconic Lord’s and showed South Africa the door of elimination with a 49-run triumph. They didn’t stop and roared with even more ferocity in the next match against New Zealand at the Edgbaston in Birmingham, winning the encounter by a margin of six wickets.
Babar Azam notched his 10th ODI century and coupled with Haris Sohail’s back-to-back fifties, Pakistan registered their third win of the mega event. Most importantly, Pakistan keeps themselves in contention for a berth in the semis. Their next game is against Afghanistan and Sarfaraz’s men would be oozing confidence.

In the meantime, Sania is quite satisfied with Pakistan’s jaw-dropping comeback. She believes that while sports can slap one right across the face at times, it can also take one to the cloud 9 in no time. She took to Twitter and wrote, “What an incredibly great leveler sport can be,”
