Ricky Ponting is considered to be one of the greatest batsmen to ever play the game. The former Australia captain made his debut in 1995 against Sri Lanka and went on to play the game till 2012. He was a phenomenal batsman and a legendary leader, who was part of three World Cup wins for Australia- 1999, 2003 and 2007. He led the team in two of those victories in 2003 and 2007.

The 2003 World Cup was special for the Tasmania-born batsman, as it was his first ICC event as captain of the Kangaroos and he had lost the services of Shane Warne just before the start of the tournament and then lost Jason Gillespie to an injury. However, he led from the front, as Australia remained unbeaten throughout the league stages and the Super Six stage, to enter the finals, where they met India.

Unfortunately for India, who were led by Sourav Ganguly, it just wasn’t their day as Adam Gilchrist launched a scathing attack right from the start and then Ricky Ponting and Damien Martyn rubbed salt into the wounds of the Indian bowlers, as Australia made 359/2 in 50 overs, still the highest score in a World Cup final. Damien Martyn slammed 88 unbeaten runs and shared a 234*-run partnership with Ponting for the third wicket.

Ricky Ponting, on the other hand, slammed 140* in 121 balls with 8 sixes and 4 fours and buried any chances of the Men in Blue to win that match. India replied scoring only 234 runs with Virender Sehwag making 80-odd runs. Australia won the final and the World Cup quite easily. Cricket Australia shared the video of Ponting’s innings, as it came on this day, March 23.

Ponting’s nostalgic post

Ponting added to the nostalgia by sharing the image of the bat he used in the final to score that amazing century on Twitter. He posted, “Given we’ve all got a bit of time on our hands as we stay at home, thought I’d go through what I’ve kept from my career and share some of it with everyone on a regular basis – this is the bat I used in the 2003 World Cup final”

However, the Indian fans weren’t getting any of that and demanded that Ricky Ponting showed them the spring in the handle of his bat. It is a very big rumor that Ponting’s bat used in the final had spring in the handle, given that he smacked eight effortless sixes in the match and many came against fast bowlers as well. This nostalgic photo led to fans trolling the former Aussie skipper and we have picked best among them.
