India began their tour on a great note scoring a huge total of 399/3 by the end of day 1 thanks to a blistering 190 from Shikhar Dhawan and a well-composed unbeaten knock of 144 from Cheteshwar Pujara. The pair didn’t let Abhinav Mukund and Virat Kohli’s failures affect the team’s momentum in the terrific batting conditions at Galle.

Here we look at all the stats and records created during the day’s play.

3 – The instance of Dhawan and Pujara both scoring centuries is only the 3rd occasion when two Indians have scored centuries on the first day of initial Test on an overseas tour. India had similar starts in 1999 series in Sri Lanka and 2001 series in South Africa.

3 – Dhawan and Abhinav Mukund is only the 3rd left-handed opening pair for India in Test cricket. Gautam Gambhir-Irfan Pathan in 2005 and Gambhir-Mukund in 2011 are the other two left-hander opening pairs for India in Tests.

5 – Dhawan’s hundred in this game is his 5th Test century and the first since 2015 which was also against Sri Lanka at the same venue Galle.

12 – Number of centuries Pujara has conquered in Test cricket. This was his 40th hundred in first-class cricket and 50th in professional cricket career.

110 – Balls Shikhar Dhawan took to score his century; the 3rd fastest Test hundred by an Indian in the last 4 years. Dhawan himself scored a century in 85 balls and 101 balls in this period in Test cricket.

126 – Runs Dhawan scored in the 2nd session on day 2; the 2nd most by an Indian in a single session in Test cricket. Virender Sehwag scored 133 runs vs Sri Lanka in Mumbai, 2009.

190 – Dhawan’s 190 is the 3rd highest individual score by an Indian in Test cricket in Sri Lanka. Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar scored double hundreds for India in SL.

253 – Partnership stand between Dhawan and Pujara is the highest for the 2nd wicket for India against Sri Lanka. Sehwag and Rahul Dravid had put on a 237-run partnership in 2009 at the CCI.

399/3 – India’s total of 399 runs on day 1 are the most by any visiting team on the opening day of a Test in Sri Lanka going past South Africa’s 362 in 2006. Only once Sri Lanka managed to post 400 and more on the opening day of a Test in Sri Lanka (449/7 v Bangladesh in 2005).

417/2 – India’s 399/3 is their 2nd highest total on the opening day of a Test match and their highest in an away Test. They posted 417/2 vs Sri Lanka at Kanpur in 2009. Their previous highest outside home was 375/9 in Wellington against New Zealand in 2009.
